How to use love balls: sequence and minutes
The pack is open, and you want to know what comes next. Love balls are a sex toy first, not a substitute for targeted pelvic-floor training.

You have opened the pack and mostly want the next move: how do the balls go in, how long do they stay, and how do you get them out cleanly again? The mythology around Ben Wa and the pelvic floor can wait. The sequence comes first.
In shops, the same sets often carry two promises: sex toy and training aid. That means you can use them for pleasure and light holding work. You should still not expect an erotic kit to do the same job as targeted pelvic-floor training or medical vaginal cones.

What love balls are and are not
On the shelf they are called love balls, Ben Wa, Smartballs or kegel balls. Usually that means one or two hollow spheres, often with a smaller inner ball, and a cord for removal. The inner ball can shift slightly with movement. That is what many shops sell as stimulation.
Vaginal cones from pelvic-floor rehab are different: stepped training weights that you hold by deliberate contraction. The stronger evidence on incontinence mainly covers cones and exercises, not every erotic kit. A clear overview of terms and construction is also on Wikipedia’s page on Vaginalkugeln. The smartest reading of the packaging is: sex toy, yes. Training claims, check separately.
How to use love balls: the sequence
Best start: relaxed, with enough lube, and a short session. Pain is not a warm-up. It is a stop signal. If it burns, presses or simply feels wrong, stop and check material, size and hygiene before you try again.
The sequence itself is closer to a tampon than to a gym plan. You want to insert the balls so the retrieval cord stays safely outside, hold them briefly, then pull them out without force. Anal use is not an option for typical love-ball sets: there is no flared base to stop them slipping inward.
- Wash your hands and the balls.
- On silicone, water-based lube. Oil and silicone lube can damage silicone.
- Insert them like a tampon. Lying down is often easier at first.
- Leave the retrieval cord outside.
- Wear them briefly, then pull them out by the cord. If they stick: more lube and a change of position, not force.
- Clean afterwards.
- Not anally, and do not share them casually.
How long to wear love balls
To start, 10 to 15 minutes is enough. Go shorter if it feels uncomfortable. Many people overdo the first sessions and end up with pelvic-floor soreness because they start too long or too heavy.
Over two to four weeks you can build slowly, up to about 30 to 40 minutes max. One or two rest days a week belong in the plan so the muscle can recover. Leaving them in overnight does nothing. We do not recommend wearing them all day: hours with a foreign object add hygiene and holding load without turning into a sensible training protocol.
Love balls and pelvic-floor training
Love balls can have a supportive effect, but they do not replace functional pelvic-floor training. That training works not only on strength, but also on the holding and stability function of the pelvic floor.

That is how to read the packaging claims. For urinary incontinence, targeted pelvic-floor training for at least three months is the gold standard: tense, hold, release, ideally with guidance. That is work on control and release, not only on holding a weight against gravity.
Weighted vaginal cones beat doing nothing. They are not clearly better than exercises alone. That is also what the Cochrane review on weighted vaginal cones shows. Love balls may accompany training, for example by giving you feedback on whether you can hold at all. They replace neither exercises nor a clinical check if you leak urine or the pelvic floor feels overactive and painful.
Materials and cleaning for love balls
To start, larger and lighter often beats small and heavy. Seamless silicone, steel or glass is easier to keep clean than models with many grooves and seams. That means the prettiest shape in the photo helps little if you cannot clean the surface reliably.
Material quality matters. Cheap plastics and older metal sets have shown problematic substances in past tests, including organotin compounds. We are not inventing current product rankings here. What still decides a lot is cleaning, the maker’s instructions, and a surface without unnecessary seams.
- Clean after every use.
- Hard surfaces: soap and warm water if the instructions allow it.
- Boil only if the maker explicitly allows it.
- Do not use vaginally what was used anally.
- Pause if you have a vaginal infection.
Love balls in pregnancy and after birth
Skip love balls in pregnancy. After birth, only once healing is complete. As a rough guide, six to eight weeks. After a perineal tear, episiotomy or caesarean, often later, and only with clearance from a clinician or midwife.
If you leak urine or it hurts, that belongs in a clinic, not in a shopping cart. After clearance, ordinary tense-and-release exercises can be more useful earlier than an insertable toy.
In short
Using love balls means, at heart: start clean, keep the minutes short, leave the cord outside, finish clean. For the pelvic floor you need training. The toy can support at most. Addresses and orientation in retail are under Sex shops, but a listing replaces neither hygiene nor medical clarification.
Frequently asked questions
How do you use love balls?
Wash your hands and the balls, use water-based lube on silicone, insert them like a tampon, leave the cord outside, wear them briefly, pull them out by the cord, then clean them. Stop if it hurts.
What are love balls for?
A sex toy first. Shops often also sell them as a pelvic-floor aid. Evidence on weighted vaginal cones does not automatically cover every erotic set.
How long should you wear love balls?
Start with 10 to 15 minutes, shorter if it feels uncomfortable. Build over two to four weeks to a maximum of about 30 to 40 minutes, with one or two rest days a week. Not overnight, and not all day.
Do love balls train the pelvic floor?
Targeted pelvic-floor training for at least three months is the standard for urinary incontinence. Weighted cones beat doing nothing, but are not clearly better than exercises. Love balls may support training. They do not replace it.
Can you use love balls in pregnancy or after birth?
Not in pregnancy. After birth, only once healing is complete. Rough guide: six to eight weeks, later after a tear, episiotomy or caesarean, and only with clearance.
Which material and which lube for love balls?
Seamless silicone, steel or glass is easier to clean. On silicone, water-based lube. To start, prefer larger and lighter over small and heavy.
Can you use love balls anally?
No. Without a flared base they can slip inward. Do not share them casually. Stop if it hurts.
