What is a laufhaus?

If you search “what is a laufhaus”, you usually want the floor plan, not a mood. The short answer: a laufhaus is a brothel made of corridors. Workers rent rooms. You walk. An open door usually means someone is available. You talk. You leave again, also without sex.

There is typically no show, no sauna ticket, no hostess at a champagne stand. Bordell is the wider word. A laufhaus is one way of building that.

What the word means

Laufhaus is German for a house you walk. Guests move along the corridor and look into rooms before they choose. The Duden puts it that way. Keep the German word in English. “Running house” is not what readers mean.

That sentence is from a report in Vienna. The floor plan matches how the word is used in Germany. It is not a tour of a German house.

How the house typically works

• The operator lets rooms to self-employed workers. The house does not sell the sex.
• If someone is available, the door is often open, or a light above it is green. Houses differ. Some wait in the doorway.
• You walk. You speak at the door. Type, duration and pay are agreed there, then you go in, or you walk on.
• In most houses there is no entrance fee and no drink minimum. Cash is common. One operator names an ATM on site and no cards in the house.

You can walk the corridor and leave. That is part of the model, not a loophole. There is no national average price for a room or a session here. Do not take an Austrian figure or an old forum number as the German rate.

Brothel, sauna club, swinger club, escort

A brothel is any venue for paid sex. A laufhaus is one shape of that. Berlin’s public service lists “brothel, puff, laufhaus” as examples of a prostitution venue that needs a permit.

Escort is mediation outside the operator’s premises: a booking, a meeting elsewhere. It is not a walk-in corridor. A sex cinema shows films, often in booths. A strip club is a show you watch. A tantra massage is a booked session. None of those is a laufhaus.

What the law looks at

The shape of sexual services is settled only between the sex worker and the client, on their own responsibility.

That is why the landlord is a landlord, not a director of the sex. The Prostitution Act already banned instructions about whether, how or how far a sexual service goes. The 2017 protection act adds a permit for the venue, a written operating concept, rooms that cannot be seen from outside, a door that opens from inside, sanitation, a lockable place to keep things, and condoms on site during opening hours.

Service rooms may not be designated as living or sleeping space. English-language pages sometimes claim workers also sleep in laufhaus rooms. German law treats that as the exception, not the rule. A 2025 administrative court case in Baden-Württemberg was about a laufhaus operator asking for exactly that exception.

For intercourse, clients and sex workers must use condoms. Hamburg names oral, vaginal and anal. The fine is on the client, up to 50,000 euros. Advertising sex without a condom is banned. A worker may refuse or stop, even after an agreement. Then you do not pay for what did not happen.

How many laufhäuser exist is not broken out. Destatis counts prostitution venues together. In August 2026 it reported about 32,500 registered sex workers and about 2,260 permits. There is no official laufhaus subset.

What to settle before the door

• The house page: hours, 18+, door fee or free entry, cash or ATM.
• Who may enter as a guest. If the site is silent, do not invent a couple night.
• The condom notice. If it is missing, that is information about the house.
• The price in the room, before anything starts. The landlord does not set it.
• No is enough. Walking on is part of the model.
