What is table dance?
Erotic dance on a stage, a bar or a table. You watch. You usually may not touch. How it differs from striptease, lap dance and a brothel.

If you search “what is table dance”, you usually want a simple split: a show you watch, or sex you buy. The short answer: table dance is erotic dance in a nightclub, on a stage, a bar or a table. You look. You may tip. You usually do not touch.
Lap dance is closer. A brothel is something else. What a specific house allows is in its rules, not in the word on the door.

What table dance means
Table dance comes from English: dance at the table. In German clubs it is usually written as one word, Tabledance. Dancers perform on a stage or a counter, often with a vertical pole as a prop. Women and men both do this work. In most German rooms the show is still aimed at a male audience.
A typical set starts as a stage show for the room. Then it moves closer: a small group, or one guest, a semi-private dance ordered with tips or cash. Tips are banknotes or house dollars the club prints. Apart from fastening a tip to clothing, contact from the guest is usually not allowed.
Striptease, pole, lap dance
Striptease is the broader term: erotic undressing on a nightclub stage, built on delay and suggestion, not on a finished act in the first minute. Table dance is a club form of that, close to the tables.
The pole in a strip club is a prop, not a sports class. Pole sport in a gym is a different practice, even if the tube looks the same.
Lap dance means dance on the lap: between the guest’s legs or sitting on them, sometimes imitating sex while seated. Some contact may be possible. That is not the same as a dance on a table across from you.

How the night typically runs
- Door, ID, often a cloakroom. Whether there is a cover charge is on the club’s page. We do not invent figures.
- A stage programme, then dancers on the floor or at tables.
- A booked dance is extra. Tips are extra. Drinks are often clearly more expensive than in an ordinary bar. A share of that sale is often part of the dancer’s pay.
- Many dancers stay only a short time in one club and move on. Long residencies are the exception.
Dancers are workers, not part of the drinks list. How you speak to them is part of the house rules, even if the flyer never writes it down.
What you should not do as a guest
- Do not grab. A tip on clothing is not an invitation to hold.
- Do not assume a dance includes sex. If the house sells more, it says so. If it does not, it does not.
- Photos: banned in many rooms. The phone stays away from the stage.
- If someone says no, that is the end of the sentence.
What the law draws as a line
Shows of a purely performative character, in which no other person present is sexually involved, are not sexual services.
Prostitutes Protection Act, section 2
That sentence is why a table-dance show is not automatically prostitution in the legal sense. The Higher Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg confirmed in 2025 that a table-dance bar did not need a licence under that Act, as long as the city could not prove lap dances or private dances beyond the show. A brothel in the same building did not turn the bar into a prostitution business by itself.
Lap dance, on a guest’s lap, has been treated as having a sexual character because another person is involved, not only as an audience. That is a court reading, not a promise that every club stays on the stage side of the line. If a house sells private rooms, read that as what it is.
Strip club, swinger club, brothel
In a strip club you pay to watch, or to book a dance. In a swinger club, sex between guests is provided for. In a brothel you pay for a sexual service. The three doors can sit in the same street. They are not the same evening.
Clubs in the directory
Addresses are under strip clubs. A listing is an entry, not a review. What you may watch, and what you may not touch, is on the operator’s site.
Frequently asked questions
What is table dance?
Erotic dance in a nightclub, on a stage, a bar or a table, often with a pole. Guests usually may not touch. Tips yes. Grabbing no.
Is table dance the same as striptease?
Striptease is the broader art of erotic undressing. Table dance is a club form of that: close to the tables, often after a stage show, paid with tips or a booked dance.
What is the difference between table dance and lap dance?
Table dance happens on a stage, bar or table. Contact from the guest is usually not allowed. Lap dance happens between the legs or on the lap. That is closer, and courts have treated it differently in law.
Is table dance sex work?
A show with a purely performative character, where no other person present is sexually involved, is not a sexual service under the Prostitutes Protection Act. Lap dance on a guest’s lap has been seen differently. What a specific club sells is in its house rules.
May I touch the dancer?
Usually no, except what is needed to attach a tip. The house rules decide. If you are unsure, do not reach.
Why are drinks so expensive?
Dancers often earn a share of drink sales. High bar prices are part of the model, not a surprise at the end of the night. There are no blanket door prices here. Those are on the club’s page.
Is a strip club a swinger club?
No. In a strip club you watch a show, or book a dance. In a swinger club, sex between guests is provided for. Different door, different rules.
