What do you wear to a swinger club?

The search is rarely about fashion. It is the fear of looking wrong at the door, or of walking into the play area in sportswear. The short answer: you often need two outfits. One until the cloakroom. One after.

The club’s house rules count more than any guide. What follows is a common pattern in Germany, not a promise for Friday.

Two outfits: arrival and club

After paying, guests change or undress in the locker area. Street clothes stay in the locker. Inside the club, lingerie is the usual club outfit in much of Central Europe, Northern Europe and North America: not the jeans from the car park.

In Italy, France and Spain, clothes more often stay on until the play area. If you are going out in Germany, plan for a change.

What women typically wear

Lingerie, a dress, a corset, a skirt. In the bar of some houses, evening dress rather than underwear only. Showing skin is not the duty. Being put-together, and matching the house, is.

What men typically wear

Men have less of a standard. A shirt and dark trousers are a safe look at the door. After changing, underwear that is not the everyday cotton from home. Ribbed cotton (the classic undershirt knit) is widely disliked in the scene.

Tracksuit, a checked everyday shirt, a white ribbed vest, a towel around the hips as the only garment: several houses say no to that, in so many words.

What often does not get through the door

Some clubs want the bar to look like a proper restaurant: shirt, long trousers, no jeans, no trainers, for the whole time you sit there. Savannah, near Leipzig, writes it that way. Other houses, such as Avarus in Berlin, allow dark shorts and a decent top, and still refuse jeans, white ribbed underwear and a towel as the only clothing.

That is not a national rule. It is house law. If you are unsure, read the club page before you pack.

Theme nights

Patent, leather, nude, bi: on those nights the theme is often required, not decoration. An ordinary shirt does not meet a latex evening. If there is no theme, the usual club outfit is enough. Light fetish clothing is welcome in many houses even without a motto.

Shoes, bag, phone

Valuables and the phone belong in the locker. Many houses ban photos. Shoes: whatever the club writes. If nothing is written, take something you can also take off.

What to check beforehand

• Is there a written dress code?
• Is it a theme night, and is the theme required?
• Does the bar have stricter rules than the play area?
• Are there lockers and a changing room?
• Jeans, trainers, sportswear: allowed or not?

If those points are missing, write before you travel. Clothes are easier to get right at home than at the door.
